This is a hand crafted "Shaving Horse", also known as a "Bodger's Bench". This style of workbench is very useful in the working of green wood. A foot operated clamp holds wood secure while using a draw knife or spoke shave to peel bark or shape wood into handles or carvings. This bench is rough sawed cedar, the legs and clamp are Pacific Madrone (arbutus menziesii).
A billhook is used in the processing, or "dressing" of wood such as Oregon Ash, Beaked Hazel, Bigleaf Maple and bamboo into a variety of useful forms.
